Artist Biography
Christian Royal is an aspiring potter-in-training who was born a little more special than most; he was born with Down syndrome. In spite of this genetic disorder and its associated hurdles, Christian has learned to make his own hand crafted pottery merchandise. Christian creates stoneware products with the charm of things imperfect and simple.
In contrast to most kitchenware, which is symmetrical, Christian's pottery is delightfully irregular, often utilizing asymmetrical glaze designs on functional pieces or decorative pieces formed with foliage impressions and shapes. Christian Royal Pottery is the craftwork resulting from the emerging skills of a talented young man with an intellectual disability.
Christian began pottery lessons in the autumn of 2006. He has shown a special interest and developed an aptitude in slab-built pottery. Both his design and decorative skills are being refined gradually while maintaining the intent of simple, striking, and desirable pieces.
Christian is presently acquiring the elementary skills and techniques of wheel-thrown pottery. Christian’s training and his daily studio production work are the beginnings of an aspiration to provide him with a vocational opportunity envisioned to give his life a sense of value, meaning and identity in society
