A Letter from Social Security Administration

Dear Third-Party Organizations:

We are writing to inform you of an update to the Representative Payee program that might affect you and the community you serve. The Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018 was signed into law on April 13. One of the provisions of the law directs SSA to award grants to state Protection & Advocacy systems (P&A) to conduct all periodic representative-payee site reviews along with additional discretionary reviews on SSA’s behalf. The purpose of these reviews is to verify that the representative payee is using the benefits properly on behalf of the beneficiary and is carrying out representative-payee responsibilities and duties correctly.

In addition, the P&As will conduct educational visits and certain reviews based on allegations of performance issues. The purpose of the educational visits is to ensure that payees fully understand their duties and responsibilities and to educate them on record-keeping and reporting responsibilities.
We hope you find this information useful. You may learn more about Representative Payee Site Reviews conducted by Protection and Advocacy System here.
