New P&A Program to Monitor Social Security Administration (SSA) Representative Payees

In March 2018, a bipartisan Social Security bill unanimously passed in Congress and was signed by the President on April 13, 2018.  This bill created a new P&A program to monitor Social Security Administration (SSA) representative payees.  This new initiative is scheduled to begin August 1, 2018. A representative payee is designated to receive Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income benefits for a person who has been determined to be not fully capable of managing the individual’s benefits. Unfortunately, investigations have uncovered representative payees who have stolen from, exploited, and neglected the people with disabilities they were to help. This new program will provide vital accountability services to protect the rights of SSA recipients. P&A will provide more information about this new program as we receive it.
